Natural Factors Natural Factors - Glycine 5g, 450 g
Natural Factors Glycine - An athletic support supplement that assists in building lean muscle mass when combined with regular resistance training and a healthy, balanced diet. It provides a source of an amino acid involved biochemically in muscle protein synthesis and helps support healthy blood sugar levels. Each scoop of the neutral-tasting, vegan powder contains 5 g of glycine made through natural fermentation. This formula contains no fillers, is non-GMO, and offers flexible dosing of 1–3 scoops per day.

Why people keep reordering it
Best suited to: wants the bedtime glycine dose without capsules, buys collagen mainly for the glycine, takes 10 g a day or more and hates pills.
What the research supports
Each scoop is 5 g of fermented free-form glycine, the only ingredient. Label range is 1 to 3 scoops a day, so the tub lasts 30 to 90 days.
Sleep trials use about 3 g of glycine before bed.
- Blood glucose (evidence: mixed, from small randomized controlled trial, observational)
- People with poorer glucose control tend to run lower on plasma glycine, which is one clue it plays a role in how the body handles glucose. Small supplementation trials have gone both ways on whether adding it back moves glucose markers.
- Sleep (evidence: limited, from randomized crossover trial)
- Glycine is thought to lower core body temperature and quiet the nervous system before sleep. Crossover trials using 3 g before bed found people fell asleep faster and rated next-day alertness higher, though each study was only a dozen or so people.
- Collagen synthesis (evidence: limited, from randomized crossover trial)
- Collagen is roughly a third glycine by weight, and dietary supply can be the limiting factor in how much the body makes. Human trials showing that supplemental glycine changes skin or connective tissue directly are still thin.
- Muscle growth (evidence: limited, from randomized crossover trial)
- Muscle protein synthesis is triggered mainly by essential amino acids like leucine, and glycine is not one of them. It adds to total amino intake, but will not by itself build muscle or strength.

Is it right for you
Worth it if
- Wants the bedtime glycine dose without capsules
- One 5 g scoop covers the 3 g used in the sleep trials, and glycine dissolves clear in plain water.
- Buys collagen mainly for the glycine
- Glycine is close to a third of collagen's amino acid content, so 5 g of pure glycine delivers more of it than a 10 g collagen scoop, for far less per gram.
- Takes 10 g a day or more and hates pills
- At 5 g per scoop, a 15 g daily intake is three scoops instead of thirty capsules.
Look elsewhere if
- Wants an amino acid that actually drives muscle growth
- Leucine-rich whey protein or a full essential amino acid blend does that job. Glycine is non-essential and your body already makes some.
- Wants a reliable wind-down that works the first night
- Magnesium bisglycinate or L-theanine are better-studied first stops, and the glycine sleep trials are small enough that it may do nothing for you.
- Only needs a gram or two a day
- A 500 mg capsule is easier to dose accurately than eyeballing a fifth of a scoop.
What to expect
If you notice anything, it will be on sleep, and it shows up the same night or not at all. People in the trials fell asleep faster and rated themselves less groggy the next morning rather than feeling sedated. Everything else glycine does, feeding collagen synthesis and glucose handling, happens quietly with nothing to feel.
How it compares
- Compared with glycine capsules
- 5 g per scoop instead of 500 mg per capsule, so a research-sized dose is one scoop rather than six to ten capsules, and the cost per gram in a 450 g tub is a fraction of the capsule price. The tradeoff: You have to mix it into liquid every time, and a scoop is an approximation rather than a measured 5.00 g.
- Compared with a collagen peptide powder
- Pure glycine, so you know exactly which amino acid you are taking and how much of it. The tradeoff: You lose the proline, hydroxyproline and peptide fractions that the collagen research actually tested.
