Why people keep reordering it

Highly absorbable forms
Chelated forms your body takes up, instead of oxide that mostly passes through.
Calm and recovery
Supports muscle relaxation, sleep quality and everyday stress resilience.
Gentle on digestion
Formulated to skip the laxative effect of cheaper magnesium.

Best suited to: vegetarians and people eating little red meat, someone with a slow-healing scrape or cut, someone who found zinc oxide did nothing.

What the research supports

One vegetarian capsule gives 30 mg of elemental zinc from zinc citrate, taken with food. Ninety capsules lasts about three months at one a day.

Studies use 15 to 25 mg of zinc a day for immune defence.

Zinc absorption (evidence: strong, from stable isotope absorption studies, randomized controlled trial)
Zinc citrate has been directly measured absorbing at about 60 percent in adults, on par with gluconate and better than oxide, so a 30 mg capsule reliably raises what your body actually takes in.
Immunity (evidence: moderate, from randomized controlled trial, meta-analysis)
Zinc is required for immune cells to develop and respond, and correcting a shortfall measurably improves those measures, though the effect fades once your levels are already adequate.
Tissue repair (evidence: moderate, from randomized controlled trial, meta-analysis)
The enzymes that rebuild collagen and connective tissue need zinc to work, so correcting a real shortfall speeds healing, though piling on more zinc once you have enough does not help further.
Taste and smell (evidence: limited, from small human trials, observational)
Blunted taste is a recognized sign that zinc is low, but once someone already has enough, extra zinc has not been shown to sharpen taste further in trials.

Is it right for you

Worth it if

vegetarians and people eating little red meat
phytates in grains, beans and nuts bind zinc and cut absorption sharply, and 30 mg of a well-absorbed citrate covers that gap in a way an 8 mg dose would not.
someone with a slow-healing scrape or cut
zinc is a cofactor in the collagen and matrix enzymes that do tissue repair, and this is a repletion-scale dose rather than a token amount.
someone who found zinc oxide did nothing
oxide absorbs around 50 percent and leans on stomach acid to dissolve; citrate absorbs at about 60 percent and is far less dependent on that.

Look elsewhere if

anyone whose multivitamin already has 15 mg of zinc
a 15 mg standalone, or just the multivitamin on its own, since stacking this on top puts you at or past the 40 mg daily upper limit.
someone who wants a lozenge for the first day of a cold
zinc acetate or gluconate lozenges dissolved slowly in the mouth are what those trials used, because the effect there is local in the throat, not systemic. A swallowed capsule does not reproduce it.
someone with a very sensitive stomach
zinc bisglycinate is the gentler chelate; citrate is decent but 30 mg of any zinc taken without food is a common cause of nausea.

What to expect

Take it with food, or expect nausea within the hour. Zinc status shifts over weeks rather than days, so give it three to four weeks before judging anything, and if you are staying on 30 mg for more than a couple of months, plan for copper alongside it.

How it compares

Compared with zinc oxide, the cheapest form on the shelf
measured fractional absorption from citrate is about 60 percent against roughly 50 percent for oxide, and citrate does not need much stomach acid to dissolve. The tradeoff: oxide is cheaper per milligram, and for someone with normal stomach acid and no digestive complaints the difference is real but not dramatic.
Compared with zinc bisglycinate at 25 mg
citrate costs less per capsule and delivers a slightly higher elemental dose at 30 mg. The tradeoff: the amino acid chelate is the more comfortable option on a light stomach, which is the main reason people pay more for it.
