Why people keep reordering it
- Easier wind-down
- Supports a calm transition into restful sleep.
- Non-habit forming
- Works with your own rhythm, with nothing to wean off.
- Wake up clear
- Made to support deep sleep without the morning grog.
Best suited to: night shift workers sleeping in daylight, someone who tried 3 mg and felt nothing, long-haul travel across several time zones.
What the research supports
One tablet is 10 mg of melatonin. 90 tablets is three months at one a night.
Studies use 0.5 to 5 mg a night.
- Sleep onset (evidence: strong, from meta-analysis, randomized controlled trial)
- Melatonin signals to the brain that night has started, nudging the body clock earlier. Across dozens of trials it shortens time to fall asleep by roughly seven to twelve minutes, at doses from 0.5 to 5 mg.
- Jet lag (evidence: strong, from meta-analysis, randomized controlled trial)
- Crossing time zones leaves the body clock reading the wrong hour. Taken at the new bedtime, melatonin resets that clock and cuts daytime tiredness after travel, most clearly heading east.
- Shift work sleep (evidence: moderate, from randomized controlled trial)
- Working nights forces sleep into daylight hours when the body clock is pushing toward wakefulness. Melatonin taken before a daytime sleep adds modestly to total sleep length, often under half an hour.
- Staying asleep (evidence: mixed, from randomized controlled trial)
- Melatonin clears the bloodstream within a few hours, so it can start sleep without covering the rest of the night. It helps falling asleep far more consistently than it helps you stay asleep once you wake.

Is it right for you
Worth it if
- Night shift workers sleeping in daylight
- Shift work trials have run doses up to 10 mg, and a daytime sleep fighting bright light is one of the few situations where the larger dose is defensible.
- Someone who tried 3 mg and felt nothing
- 10 mg in one tablet is a clean next test before writing melatonin off, without stacking three or four smaller tablets.
- Long-haul travel across several time zones
- Taken at bedtime in the destination time zone, melatonin moves the body clock faster than daylight alone does.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone taking melatonin for the first time
- start at 0.5 to 3 mg. The low doses match the body's own night-time levels, work as well for falling asleep, and leave less morning fog. A 5 mg sublingual or a 3 mg tablet is the better first buy.
- Someone who wakes up foggy on melatonin
- half or a quarter of a low-dose tablet, since morning fog is nearly always a dose problem rather than a melatonin problem.
- Someone whose sleep breaks apart at 3 am
- an extended-release melatonin, or 200 to 300 mg of magnesium in the evening, since a plain tablet releases all 10 mg at once and is largely cleared by the small hours.
What to expect
Drowsiness usually arrives 30 to 60 minutes after a swallowed tablet, and it feels like a nudge toward sleep rather than being switched off. Judge it over three or four nights. If you wake up heavy-headed, that is the signal to step the dose down rather than to keep going.
How it compares
- Compared with the 5 mg sublingual version
- Twice the milligrams, and a swallowed tablet holds its level a little later into the night than something that peaks fast and falls fast. The tradeoff: It is slower to act because it has to clear the gut and the liver first, and the higher dose raises the odds of waking up heavy-headed.
- Compared with a 3 mg melatonin tablet
- One tablet covers a dose you would otherwise need three of, which matters if you have already established that smaller doses do nothing for you. The tradeoff: For most people the 3 mg would have worked just as well, so the extra 7 mg buys grogginess risk rather than sleep.
