Skin dryness (evidence: mixed, from randomized controlled trial, meta-analysis): GLA feeds into the fats that seal the outer layer of skin and hold moisture in, but pooled human trials of evening primrose oil for dry, itchy skin have not shown a consistent effect.
Fatty acid intake (evidence: strong, from observational study): Linoleic acid cannot be made by the body and each softgel adds about 730 mg, though most people already get several grams a day from ordinary cooking oils.

What to expect

Nothing in the first month. Fatty acids have to work their way into cell membranes before anything changes, which is why the skin and cycle trials ran 8 to 12 weeks before measuring. If three months at three softgels a day has done nothing, it is not going to.
