Sisu Sisu - 5-HTP 100mg, 60 caps
Sisu 5-HTP - A metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan. Proteins in the food we eat provide us with amino acids. One of those amino acids is tryptophan. Tryptophan is broken down by vitamins, enzymes and other co-factors, into 5-HTP and then 5-HTP is turned into serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that tells your brain that you are satisfied and do not need to eat anymore. Serotonin deficiency contributes to weight gain, anxiety, sleeplessness and other symptoms. Low serotonin levels also lead to carbohydrate cravings (sugar cravings) and overeating. 5-HTP can help reduce appetite, while it also can enhance your mood, and increase your energy levels.

Why people keep reordering it
- Adaptogen support
- Herbs traditionally used to help the body adapt to everyday stress.
- Steady energy
- Supports balanced energy without the spike and the crash.
- Calm focus
- Helps you stay even through demanding days.
Best suited to: lies awake for an hour before sleeping, tried tryptophan and found it weak, wants to start low and build slowly.
What the research supports
One capsule is 100 mg of 5-HTP from Griffonia seed. Sixty capsules is twenty days at the label's three a day.
Sleep and mood trials use 100 to 300 mg a day.
- Falling asleep (evidence: moderate, from randomized controlled trial)
- 5-HTP is the step your body takes just before making serotonin, which it converts to melatonin at night. Small trials at 100 to 300 mg report a shorter time to fall asleep.
- Mood (evidence: mixed, from randomized controlled trial, systematic review)
- Serotonin is built from 5-HTP, so supplying it directly skips the slowest step in that chain. Human trials are mostly small and decades old, with real effects in some and none in others.
- Appetite (evidence: limited, from randomized controlled trial)
- Serotonin signalling plays a role in feeling full after eating. The findings behind that rest on a few small trials at 600 to 900 mg a day, double what three capsules give here.

Is it right for you
Worth it if
- lies awake for an hour before sleeping
- 100 mg taken 30 to 60 minutes before bed is the amount most often used for shortening time to fall asleep.
- tried tryptophan and found it weak
- 5-HTP is one step further along the pathway and is not blocked by the amino acids from your last meal, so it converts more reliably.
- wants to start low and build slowly
- At one capsule a night this bottle runs two months, which is long enough to know whether 100 mg is doing anything before you go to 300 mg.
Look elsewhere if
- anyone on daily medication of any kind
- clear a serotonin precursor with a practitioner first. For evening calm with fewer interaction questions, magnesium bisglycinate or L-theanine.
- someone who needs a vegetarian capsule
- the shell here is gelatin, so look for 5-HTP in a hypromellose capsule.
- someone who falls asleep fine but wakes at 3 am
- 5-HTP is studied mostly for sleep onset. Magnesium bisglycinate or glycine suit night waking better.
What to expect
For sleep, people who respond usually notice easier drop-off within the first three or four nights. Daytime mood changes, if they come at all, take two to four weeks at 200 to 300 mg a day. Mild nausea in the first week is the common complaint and usually settles once you take it with food.
How it compares
- Compared with L-tryptophan
- 5-HTP converts more efficiently because it is past the rate-limiting enzyme, and it crosses into the brain without competing with the amino acids from a protein meal. The tradeoff: Tryptophan is gentler on the stomach and has a much wider comfortable dose range. 5-HTP causes nausea in some people, particularly above 100 mg at once.
- Compared with melatonin
- This works upstream on the serotonin side, which is where your own melatonin is made from, and it also has daytime mood research behind it, which melatonin does not. The tradeoff: Melatonin is cheaper, works the first night, and carries far fewer interaction questions.
