Circulation (evidence: moderate, from randomized controlled trial): Proanthocyanidins strengthen the walls of small blood vessels and improve how well they contract. Trials at 100 to 300 mg a day reported less leg heaviness and better capillary resistance, though study quality varies.
Antioxidants (evidence: moderate, from randomized controlled trial): Proanthocyanidins neutralize free radicals and help regenerate other antioxidants in the blood. Human trials at around 300 mg a day raised measured antioxidant capacity and lowered markers of oxidative damage.
Skin (evidence: limited, from in vitro, small human trials): Proanthocyanidins bind to collagen and elastin fibres and appear to protect them from breakdown in lab studies. Human trials testing this on skin are small and few.

What to expect

Nothing acute. Antioxidant and vascular effects register in blood markers rather than in sensation. If you are taking it for heavy legs, the trials that found a difference ran six to twelve weeks before measuring.

How it compares

Compared with pine bark extract: Both supply proanthocyanidins, and grape seed at this standardization gives you far more OPC per dollar than a typical 100 to 200 mg pine bark capsule. The tradeoff: The branded pine bark extracts carry more human trial data behind the exact material in the bottle, which is worth something if you want the studied product specifically.
Compared with a vitamin C tablet with citrus bioflavonoids: Grape seed OPCs are a more concentrated flavonoid class, and 285 mg a day is well past the bioflavonoid content of any vitamin C tablet.
