Purica Purica - Betaine HCL 500mg, 180 vcaps
Purica Betaine HCL - Also known as trimethylglycine or TMG, Betaine consists of the amino acid glycine and three methyl groups. Inside the body, it acts as a methyl donor, thus supporting many important functions within the body. For example, betaine assists the methylation of homocysteine to create methionine, which helps synthesize creatine. In this way, betaine helps build muscle strength, power and mass. Purica vegan betaine also helps support the liver and digestion.

Why people keep reordering it
- Researched strains
- Specific, studied strains at counts high enough to reach your gut.
- Guaranteed live cultures
- Potency held through the end of shelf life, not just at manufacture.
- Digestive balance
- Supports regularity, bloating and a healthy gut barrier.
Best suited to: meals sit heavy for hours afterward, wants to increase the dose in small steps, vegan and wants a stomach acid support.
What the research supports
Each capsule is 500 mg of betaine hydrochloride, taken alongside protein meals. The bottle holds 180 capsules.
Betaine HCl has no established dose. It is titrated by feel alongside protein meals, starting at one capsule and stopping at whatever sits comfortably.
- Stomach acid (evidence: limited, from small human trial)
- Hydrochloride reacts with water to briefly lower stomach pH, the acid that starts protein digestion. Small trials in adults with low acid output show a short-lived drop after dosing.
- Heart health (evidence: limited, from small human trial)
- Betaine helps clear a marker linked to heart strain, but only at 3 grams a day, six or more capsules here. This dose alone is not aimed at that effect.
- Strength (evidence: mixed, from randomized controlled trial)
- Betaine helps muscle cells hold water, which may aid power during short, repeated efforts. Trials disagree, and they use 2.5 grams a day of a different, unbound form, well above a meal dose here.

Is it right for you
Worth it if
- Meals sit heavy for hours afterward
- The hydrochloride adds acid at the start of a meal, which is the specific thing this does that a plant enzyme blend does not.
- Wants to increase the dose in small steps
- 500 mg per capsule is a fine enough increment to climb one capsule at a time instead of jumping in 1 gram blocks.
- Vegan and wants a stomach acid support
- Most betaine HCl products pair it with pepsin, which is animal-derived. This is betaine hydrochloride on its own.
Look elsewhere if
- Wants betaine as a methyl donor or for training
- Buy betaine anhydrous, sold as TMG, at 2.5 to 3 grams a day. That is the form and the dose every one of those studies used, and it comes with no hydrochloride.
- Already gets burning or warmth after meals
- Adding acid is the wrong direction here. Bitters or ginger before meals nudge digestion along without adding acid, and persistent burning is worth having looked at properly.
- Eats mostly light, low-protein meals
- Betaine HCl is taken with protein. If bloating after carbohydrate-heavy meals is the problem, a plant enzyme blend with amylase and cellulase fits better.
What to expect
This works meal by meal, not cumulatively, so you learn quickly whether it is for you. If low acid output was the issue, meals sit lighter within the first few days. If you feel warmth or burning in the stomach after a capsule, that is the signal you have passed what you need, and the correct response is to take fewer, not to push through it.
How it compares
- Compared with betaine anhydrous, sold as TMG
- The hydrochloride makes this a stomach acid product. TMG is the plain form, used for methylation, and does nothing for stomach acidity. The tradeoff: You cannot use this as a substitute for TMG. Gram for gram of betaine it is far more expensive, and reaching a TMG dose would mean swallowing far more hydrochloride than anyone wants.
- Compared with a digestive enzyme blend
- Enzymes break down food that is already in an acidic stomach. This addresses the acid itself, which is the upstream step and the one enzymes cannot supply. The tradeoff: It only covers acid. There are no proteases, lipases or amylases in the capsule, so if enzymes are what you actually needed, this will not deliver them.
