What the research supports
One softgel gives 18 mg of iron as bisglycinate, with folate and B12 alongside. The bottle lasts two months.

- Bisglycinate is bound to an amino acid, so it does not free up as much iron in the gut at once. That means fewer stomach and bowel complaints than plain iron salts.

- Oral iron restores the stores blood cells need to carry oxygen. Levels usually recover over two to three months when low intake was the cause.

- Bisglycinate suspended in olive oil is the gentlest common presentation of oral iron, and 18 mg is a modest amount of it.
Look elsewhere if
- A man or post-menopausal woman with no confirmed need
- Nothing at all. The daily requirement drops to 8 mg, and iron is one of the few nutrients where more than you need is not neutral. Ask your practitioner to check your level before you start.
- Told their iron stores have run down
- A higher elemental dose, around 45 mg, or whatever amount your practitioner sets. 18 mg holds a level steady but is slow at raising one.
- Wants iron inside a full multivitamin
- A multi carrying 10 to 18 mg of iron, so there is one bottle to remember rather than two.
What to expect
Nothing in the first few weeks. Iron stores move on a two to three month scale, and at 18 mg you are holding ground rather than climbing fast. Darker stools are normal and not a sign of a problem.
How it compares
- Compared with a drugstore ferrous sulphate or ferrous gluconate tablet
- The iron is chelated to two glycine molecules, so less unabsorbed free iron reaches the lower gut, which is where the cramping and constipation come from. Vitamin C, methylfolate and B12 are already in the capsule. The tradeoff: Cost, by a wide margin. Ferrous salts give far more elemental iron per dollar, and if your stomach tolerates them they raise a level just as well.
