Natural Factors Natural Factors - Hawthorn Extract, 60 vcap
Natural Factors Hawthorn Extract - Contains hawthorn leaf, flower and berry used in herbal medicine to help maintain cardiovascular health in adults. By combining the three medicinal plant parts, it provides a full spectrum of hawthorn flavonoids, including quercetin, rutin, hyperoside, and vitexin. Although the whole plant exerts a therapeutic effect, this supplement is standardized to 2.2% flavonoids for consistent dosing. Each vegetarian capsule contains 300 mg of hawthorn leaf and flower extract plus 165 mg of hawthorn berry to be taken two to three times daily for a minimum of two months. This is within the range of doses supported by clinical studies using hawthorn to strengthen heart function.

Why people keep reordering it
Best suited to: wants a hawthorn dose that matches the trials, wants leaf, flower and berry rather than berry alone, willing to give a herb two full months.
What the research supports
Each capsule pairs 300 mg of standardized hawthorn leaf and flower extract with 165 mg of hawthorn berry. Label dose is 1 to 3 capsules daily.
Trials use 600 to 900 mg of standardized extract a day.
- Circulation (evidence: moderate, from randomized controlled trial, meta-analysis)
- Hawthorn flavonoids relax and widen blood vessels, helping the heart pump against less resistance. European trials at this dose over 8 or more weeks found small, repeated gains in exercise tolerance.
- Antioxidants (evidence: limited, from in vitro, animal studies)
- Hyperoside, vitexin, rutin and quercetin from hawthorn show antioxidant and vessel-relaxing effects in lab work, with little direct human measurement at this dose.
- Blood pressure (evidence: mixed, from randomized controlled trial)
- Hawthorn dilates blood vessels through its flavonoid content, which can ease pressure on artery walls, but human trials measuring blood pressure show small, inconsistent changes.

Is it right for you
Worth it if
- Wants a hawthorn dose that matches the trials
- Two to three capsules gives 600 to 900 mg a day of extract standardized to 2.2% flavonoids, which is the amount the clinical work used.
- Wants leaf, flower and berry rather than berry alone
- Berry-only hawthorn products leave out the leaf and flower, which is where the flavonoid content the standardization is measured against is concentrated.
- Willing to give a herb two full months
- The label asks for a minimum of two months, and that matches how the trials were actually run.
Look elsewhere if
- Wants to feel something this week
- Hawthorn has no acute effect at all. If you want a same-day change in how you feel, this is the wrong shelf, and the honest move is a conversation with a practitioner.
- Takes anything daily for their heart or circulation
- Hawthorn carries interaction cautions. Check with a practitioner before adding it rather than starting on your own.
- Wants general cardiovascular nutrition
- 1 to 2 g a day of combined EPA and DHA from fish oil has far more human data behind it than any herb does.
What to expect
Nothing in the first few weeks. The trials that found anything ran 8 to 16 weeks, and the label asks for two months minimum for exactly that reason. If you tend to abandon a supplement after three weeks because nothing happened, do not start this one.
How it compares
- Compared with hawthorn berry powder or tea
- Standardization to 2.2% flavonoids means every capsule carries a known 6.6 mg of flavonoids, where berry powder and tea vary with the harvest and are much weaker per gram. The tradeoff: You pay extract prices, and a 60 capsule bottle only covers 20 to 30 days at the label dose, so a proper two month course means two or three bottles.
- Compared with CoQ10
- A completely different mechanism. Hawthorn flavonoids and procyanidins act on vessel tone, where CoQ10 feeds mitochondrial energy production inside heart muscle cells. The tradeoff: CoQ10 has more human trial volume behind it and no interaction cautions to work around, so it is the simpler first purchase.
